Tokio Hotel are one of the most successful rock bands to come out of Germany, with a constantly evolving sound that encompasses several genres including pop-rock, alt-rock and electronica. Their debut album Schrei spawned three No 1 singles and sold over half a million copies worldwide, and the band has since won a handful of accolades including the Headliner award at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2008 and Best Group at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2009. Tokio Hotel was formed by twin brothers Bill and Tom Kaulitz in Magdeburg, Germany in 2001, and the band toured extensively once drummer Gustav Schäfer and bassist Georg Listing came on board, before signing a deal with Universal in 2003. They released debut single ‘Durch den Monsun’ in 2005 and the track soon smashed the charts, reaching No 1 in Germany and Austria. Co-written by Bill Kaulitz and various high-profile songwriters, Schrei was a runaway success, producing two further No 1 singles and achieving platinum success in multiple countries. Zimmer 483 emulated the success of Schrei, and the band began to record their subsequent albums in both German and English, drafting in big-name producers including Guy Chambers and Desmond Child to produce their third chart-topping album, Humanoid. The band also released their first DVD in 2008, Tokio Hotel TV: Caught on Camera!, a fascinating documentary telling the story of their busiest year yet. Fifth album Kings of Suburbia was recorded completely in English, fully embracing their electronic-pop influences, with the catchy lead single and soft-ballad track ‘Run Run Run’ later covered by Kelly Clarkson and John Legend. Exhilarating to see live, the Melancholic Paradise tour sees Tokio Hotel playing past favourites and exciting new tracks from their latest record.
