With BTS collaborating with US superstars like Nicki Minaj, Desiigner and Halsey, and BLACKPINK making history as the first K-Pop group to play at Coachella, Korean music and culture is enjoying stratospheric international success in 2019. Few know this better than Tiffany Young, whose experience and profile gained as part of the record-breakingly popular Girls’ Generation, alongside her undeniably strong vocal talent, are propelling her promising solo career in the US. Young was scouted by K-Pop giants SM Entertainment as a teenager, moving from California to South Korea before finishing high school and debuting in Girls’ Generation in 2007. Several No 1 singles, Asia-wide headline tours and Billboard Awards later, Girls’ Generation came to become the most influential female K-Pop group of the last decade, credited alongside male counterparts BTS with aiding the genre’s ever-expanding popularity in the West. Following this success, Young began forging her own path in 2016 with the release of her debut solo album I Just Wanna Dance, trading some of K-Pop’s bubblegum kitsch for a more progressive sound palette and debuting at No 3 on the Billboard World Music charts. Fast forward to 2019, and the bold decision to set sail on a solo career is already proving a successful one for Young. The grandiose ‘Born Again’ and it’s successor ‘Lips On Lips’, a dreamy ode to the excitement of falling in love, were viewed YouTube over 13 million times within a few months, an undeniable indication of Young’s potential to capture the imaginations of audiences in Korea, the US and beyond.
