POINTER SISTERS
Universally recognised as one of the top girl groups of all time, the Pointer Sisters have enjoyed an illustrious career spanning five decades. The band’s most popular hits include ‘Automatic’, ‘Slow Hand’, ‘Jump (For My Love)’ and ‘I’m So Excited’, a track which has been played over 2.5 million times on mainstream radio. With an incredible career that’s seen the release of sixteen studio albums, Billboard Magazine ranked them as the 93rd most successful Hot 100 Artists of All Time, and the group have won numerous accolades including a coveted star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Beginning their vocal training in their father’s church, the Pointer Sisters’ debut album was released in 1973 and the band instantly found success with airplay on radio and television. The first of many Grammy Awards came in 1975 for the country track ‘Fairytale’ penned by Anita and Bonnie Pointer, but a change of musical direction came in 1976 as Bonnie left the group, and the band recorded a rock n’ roll album as the trio of Anita, June and Ruth, scoring No 2 hits with ‘Fire’ (penned by Bruce Springsteen) and the sultry ‘Slow Hand’. The Pointer Sisters would soon see their career reach dizzying heights with the release of their 1983 album Break Out, with up-tempo classics such as ‘Automatic’, ‘Jump (For My Love)’ and ‘I’m So Excited’ all reaching the Top 10. Break Out became their best-selling album, earning two Grammy Awards, two American Music Awards and triple-platinum certification. Another platinum-selling album, Contact, soon followed, cementing the band as one of the greatest pop groups of all time. The Pointer Sisters’ instantly recognisable hits are still played on dancefloors worldwide: in recent years the sisters have performed with some of the greatest symphony orchestras around the globe.
