Signing to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label to join pop heavyweights like Rihanna and DJ Khaled, along with alternative favourites like Grimes and Vic Mensa, is something of a dream come true for Nicole Bus. Having already released two albums and reaching the quarter finals of The Voice before releasing her phenomenal 2018 single ‘You’, her talent for deeply evocative and endearing vocal performances have ensured her a place as one of modern pop’s most singular voice. Half Dutch, half Curacaose, Bus developed her uncanny knack for Gospel’s raucous euphoria while singing in church as a child, experiencing her first “lightbulb moment” with the introduction to Lauryn Hill’s paradigm-shifting MTV Unplugged performance. Blown away by Hill’s ability to steep her music in raw, deep-rooted emotion, Bus knuckled down to create her debut album Heart of the Matter in 2011. The singer displayed promising range across its twelve tracks, from the infectiously cheerful opener ‘One Love’ to the tender, breathy weightlessness of ‘I Wanna Sing’. The album’s success, coupled with her unforgettable performance on The Voice, led Bus to stages in almost every continent, building the confidence to record the notably diverse 2017 follow-up, Magnolia. From the explosive choral intensity of ‘Grammies’ to the smoky, low-slung ‘Onzin’, Magnolia’s instrumentals showcased Bus’ fabulously on-point taste and growing confidence, lending her powerful vocals to a sound palette inspired by hip-hop and trap music. Recording giant Roc Nation wasted no time signing Bus to their illustrious roster in 2018. Her soaring, fervent single ‘You’, a tribute to black men amidst relentless media derogation, undoubtedly proves that Bus deserves her spot on perhaps one of the most innovative and influential imprints in modern music.
