MOS DEF

Yasiin Bey, otherwise known as Mos Def is the American hip hop sensation, born in 1973. Today, Mos Def is known for more than just his phenomenal music. He is also an actor and political activist. He has been associated with campaigns against police brutality, the force-feeding practices of Guantanamo Bay and the Bush administration’s response to Hurricane Katrina. He also represented death row inmate, Mumia Abu-Jamal with a benefit concert. As for Mos’ stellar career in music, this journey began back in 1994. Together with his siblings, Mos formed the rap group, Urban Thermo Dynamics. He soon broke away and begun appearing on LPs by the likes of Da Bush Babees and De La Soul. Mos’ next move was to form another rap group, this time called Black Star. Together with fellow band-member Talib Kweli, Mos Def wrote and released their eponymous debut LP, in ’98. Just a year later, Mos dropped his very first solo album, titled Black On Both sides. This marked the start of a string of great solo works, namely 2004’s The New Danger, 2006’s True Magic and 2009’s The Ecstatic. Today, Mos continues to write, perform and produce. In 2010, he worked alongside Damon Albarn on the Gorillaz track, ‘Stylo’. The first single to drop from their third album, Plastic Beach, this song once again reinforced Mos Def’s status as one of the best lyricists in the game. Thanks to his contributions to hip hop, About.com positioned Mos Def within the Top 20 greatest rappers of our time.
