American hip-hop artist Mase is a rapper’s rapper. Declared by Kanye West as his “favourite rapper”, he’s closely aligned with Puff Daddy’s Bad Boy records, and has been quoted by Drake and Jay-Z. Imaginative lyricism and an endearingly casual, laid-back flow catapulted this rapper from relative obscurity to the top of the Billboard chart in the late ‘90s. Born Mason Durrell Betha, Mase cut his teeth as a member of ‘90s rap group Children of the Corn alongside fellow hip-hop legends Big L and Cam’ron, making crucial connections in the NY hip-hop club scene. He soon caught the attention of Sean Combs, better known as Puff Daddy, who signed him to Bad Boy Records in 1996, effectively launching a career that would soon see Mase topping charts across the USA. After landing features on tracks from Notorious B.I.G, Busta Rhymes and Mariah Carey, he released his debut album Harlem World in 1997. An instantaneous smash, the album reigned on the Billboard chart for two weeks following it’s release, thanks in part to contributions from Jay-Z and Lil’ Kim. An undoubted success, Harlem World went four-times Platinum and produced the Top Five hit single ‘Feels So Good’. Following the release of his Gold-certified sophomore effort, Double Up, Mase took a break from the music industry to become an ordained minister. Since then, he’s made several comebacks, including 2004’s Gold-certified album Welcome Back. He remains a revered presence on the American hip-hop scene, providing guest features and verse contributions for Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Eminem, Nelly, G-Unit, 2 Chainz and Rick Ross. Mase made a welcome return to the airwaves in 2018 with his first release in fourteen years, the hard-hitting 24-track mixtape Don’t Need Security. .
