John Oates is the guitarist in Hall & Oates, the best-selling duo of all-time. Best known for worldwide hits such as ‘Maneater’, ‘I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do)’, and ‘Out of Touch’, the duo have released 18 albums since 1972, selling over 80 million records. They were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and still perform sell-out arena tours today. Successful in his own right, Oates has released eight solo albums since 2002, collaborated with contemporary artists, and is always in demand as a producer. Oates was born in New York in 1948 but raised in Philadelphia. Drawing on an eclectic range of influences, from Tamla Motown to blues and folk, he released his first record in 1966. Whilst studying at university, he met Daryl Hall. After playing together in various local bands, the pair formed Hall & Oates in the early 1970s and were soon snapped up by the iconic Atlantic label. Their second album, 1973’s Abandoned Luncheonette, went on to sell over one million copies. Their first US number one came with 1977’s ‘Rich Girl’, heralding a string of best-sellers that helped make Oates one of the most popular performers in America. Their biggest UK hits came in the early ‘80s with the classics ‘I Can’t Go For That’ and ‘Maneater’, two songs still heard on the radio today. Oates continues to be highly active as a writer, performer, and producer. He published his autobiography, Change of Seasons, in 2017. READ MORE
