Neo-soul pioneer, Grammy Award winner, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, singer and songwriter Michael Eugene Archer is one of those rare performers that has managed to balance quality, authenticity and pure talent with massive commercial success, never once compromising his musical vision. Famously dubbed “R&B Jesus” by legendary critic Robert Christgau, the artist best known as D’Angelo has forged an instantly recognisable sound over three highly influential records, distilling the essence of soul, R&B, funk and jazz into what’s quite possibly some of the grooviest music ever recorded. D’Angelo’s debut solo release, 1995’s Brown Sugar, introduced this singularly gifted artist to a mainstream audience, selling over two million copies and receiving rave reviews. The years that followed saw Archer tour internationally in support of his debut, before taking a step back from the music scene to seek inspiration for his second album: in that time, he worked with Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill. The years spent in search of creative revelation undoubtedly paid off: D’Angelo’s sophomore release, Voodoo, was released to widespread critical acclaim, debuting at No 1 on the Billboard 200, selling over 320,000 copies in seven days and remaining on the chart for 33 consecutive weeks. Widely regarded as a masterpiece, the record earned the artist a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album: the record’s lead single, the irresistibly sexy ‘Untitled (How Does It Feel)’, won a second Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal, leading GQ to declare D’Angelo as “the next Marvin Gaye.” After taking time to collaborate with a series of hip-hop titans (Dilla, Q-Tip, Common and Snoop) Archer released his third studio album, Black Messiah, in 2014. A universally acclaimed success, it earned him two further Grammy Awards, for Best R&B Album and Best R&B Song, proving that D’Angelo is without doubt the most highly regarded artist to have ever worked within the genre. .
